The Matariyyah dish
With the arrival of the rainy season, the people of Hail celebrate rainfall by preparing a traditional dish called Al-Matariyyah. It is made of white rice and clarified butter (ghee), symbolizing gratitude for the blessing of rain and reflecting the region’s authentic customs.
The tradition dates back more than 60 years. When the first rain falls, families prepare white rice with a generous amount of wild ghee, and in later years the dish expanded to include lamb and laban served alongside it.
This meal brings together neighbors and villagers, who see the dish’s whiteness as a symbol of optimism and blessings. It is prepared every year as a way of welcoming the season’s rain and strengthening the spirit of community, ensuring that this cherished tradition continues across generations.
